Senses play Chameleon

They say when you’re differently abled, the other senses are heightened. Hence the lack of a sense makes one more alert and focused as the possibility of distractions are less likely. The improvement in the remaining senses is a result of learned behaviour.

In the absence of vision, blind people pay attention to auditory cues and learn how to use them more efficiently and extend to cognitive functions such as memory and language. The musical talents of Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles, both blinded at an early age, are cited as examples of blindness conferring an advantage.

A large body of evidence shows when one is deprived of input in one sensory modality, the brain is capable of reorganizing itself to support and augment other senses, the phenomenon is called “cross modal neuroplasticity”.  Though there is evidence that it can cause problems; since the brain has reorganized itself to compensate for the loss. This could be why older people who are partially deaf find hearing aids confusing or unhelpful.

Researchers are studying this subject very closely with the intent of helping the deaf to retrain the auditory cortex to process sounds again. This research is a reminder that our brains have some hidden superpowers.

On a lighter note imagine a day wherein there is self-imposed restriction on verbal communication; express yourself with non-verbal cues. For peat’s sake do not turn to, social media to express yourself it’s not very becoming, trust me on this one.

Non-verbal communication could be a fun amalgamation of body language, gestures, and facial expressions. The eyes can play a pivotal role, they aren’t called the window to the soul for nothing also touch and proxemics.

Self restrain will if not teach you the art of effective communication, will in the least be peaceful. It may also prove to be hilarious, if you attempt to enact as a mime artist or Chaplin.

The possibilities of one’s expressions being misconstrued have me splits. Imagine you want to tell a person to leave you alone and action with your hands to go away, the other party understands the movement of your hands swaying to and fro as come closer LOL. It doesn’t end there you’re eyes are popping, begging to be read and this seductress reads them as your excitement. Picture this a mother in the midst of all the house work forgets about this “silent communication clause” and goes no asking you a dozen questions and the ranting moves to how you’re now playing dumb the ramifications will indeed make for a hearty laugh a couple of days post the incident. Imagine the spouse just turning off the laptop and smilingly picking up the mobile and going to the balcony to make a call your questions meeting with a sweet smile.

The non-verbal communication day holds the promise of flustering you, challenging you but at the end of it all giving you a story that will be shared several times with plentiful laughter.
