Have you ever been insanely jealous that the rather witty one liner
could have easily been yours. I mean, it is something so relatable, simple, yet
it didn’t strike you. Artists come in varied hues and forms. The one common
thing that binds them is their “power of observance”; they very well could
strip any given situation naked. Am not surprised that most art schools employ
sketching of nudes in the course curriculum. One must lose their inhabitations to
be their most potent self, be observant to capture the subject. The catch is in
being observant, not immersed in your subjects literally. Many greats have
fallen prey. The great Picasso did to Walter, a muse 29 years younger than
himself, with whom he had a child. He captured her beautifully in a reclining
pose, in his 1932 masterpiece titled “Many lovers of Picasso”.
The lens that one wears as an artist, the idea that they magnify one
aspect and underplay others, it is their perspective on what they want to
narrate. That one thing dramatically shifts the viewpoint completely, that’s
what makes it so marvellous. Most people, be it illustrators / writers /
directors draw their inspiration from their surroundings. That honest portrayal
is so endearing, it rarely ever fails to touch a chord. The expression of art
is incomplete until it impresses upon you on a very personal level. As Oscar
Wilde so aptly said “The artist should never try to be popular. Rather the public
should be more artistic.”
